Cakewalk for Gusserane

Brendan Furlong

Gusserane were too smooth and skilful as they raced away to a comprehensive 32-point victory over a weak Clongeen and Bannow-Ballymitty combination (St. John's Gaels) in this New Ross District Under-21 hurling Roinn 1 championship semi-final in Gusserane on Monday of last week.

Gusserane 2-28 St.John's Gaels 0-2

All the hallmarks for a runaway victory were evident from a very early stage as the eventual winners led by 0-9 to nil after just ten minutes. From here on it was a dead rubber and it was only a matter of what the eventual winning margin would be.

It turned out that 32 points separated the sides but it could have been far greater had the home team not taken their foot off the pedal in the second period.

The combination side were totally outclassed and trailed by 1-15 to nil after 26 minutes, after which they had their solitary first-half score - an Aaron Diskin point - one minute later.

Gusserane simply toyed with their opponents as John Roche, Mark O'Neill and Sam Wall hit a succession of points, with midfielders Adrian Redmond and Martin Fitzharris also getting in on the scoring act.

Their opening goal arrived in the 20th minute when full-forward Sam Wall left the defence for dead before planting a superb shot across the face of the goal into the opposite corner of the net, while their second came from fellow county Minor Mark O'Neill one minute before the break which left them with an interval lead of 2-16 to 0-1.

The result was well and truly decided during this first-half with Gusserane turning in a fine performance.

They were in more relaxed mode on the resumption but still managed a further twelve points, coming mainly through Adrian Redmond, Sam Wall, Jack Culleton and Mark O'Neill, while the losers' solitary second-half point was courtesy of an Aaron Diskin free after 46 minutes.

Gusserane were due to face Rathgarogue-Cushinstown in the New Ross District final last night (Monday).
