Crowdle hits GOG hat-trick

Town team earns first point

Dean Goodison in Clongeen

Felthard fought back from 3-10 to 0-14 down with ten minutes to play in Clongeen on Sunday to claim the draw that ensures three places in the quarter-finals of the Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group A are booked before the mid-season break.

Ger. O'Hanrahans 3-10 Fethard 1-16

The point for the seasiders means that they join Rathnure and Buffers Alley in the last eight, all sitting pretty with five points from their three games.

Fethard still have to play their fellow quarter-finalists and those games will dictate the finishing order in the group.

Geraldine O'Hanrahans, who were helped on their way by a hat-trick by Matt Crowdle, are in a battle for the final spot with Liam Mellows and St. Patrick's. The New Ross side have ties against those two to play and will fancy their chances of getting the points they need and building momentum heading to the knockouts.

Both sides would be justified in feeling a tad unlucky after this one.

Fethard played most of the hurling in the first-half and with Mark Wallace on fire from dead balls they eased their way into a 0-8 to 0-3 lead after 17 minutes.

Crowdle got his first goal seven minutes before the interval when he kicked to the net from close range, and his major on the stroke of half-time from Danny Conway's pass meant that the teams went in at the change-around deadlocked (0-10 to 2-4).

The Geraldines went in front with two quick points from Eoin Bailey and Eoin Kelly after the break and stretched that advantage when David Crowdle provided his second assist for Matt as the New Ross side moved 3-7 to 0-11 clear.

They maintained their advantage until Mikey Dwyer hared away down the right and smacked a thunderbolt to the roof of Mark Purcell's net.

That goal was followed by a levelling free from Wallace as the sides settled for a share of the spoils.
