Footballers off to winning start
Wexford's quest to escape from Division 4 of the Allianz Football League got off to a promising start in Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday, with a 0-14 to 1-8 victory over one of their likely fellow promotion challengers, Limerick.
The home side conceded five points on the trot while facing the first-half wind to fall behind by 0-6 to 0-2, but a strong finish brought them back to level terms by the break.
They were clinging to an 0-8 to 0-7 lead with 20 minutes left before four points in a purple patch from John Tubritt, Shane Roche ('45), P.J. Banville and Ciaran Lyng created some daylight.
However, Limerick bounced back and had the margin down to the minimum after a Danny Neville goal in the 67th minute.
Late points from Tiarnan Rossiter and Banville (free) secured the victory for Wexford whose next outing is in Carrick-in-Shannon on Sunday, February 12, against Leitrim who were impressive victors over Wicklow in Aughrim.
