Geraldines account for Liam Mellows

Three first-half goals helped Geraldine O'Hanrahans to overcome Liam Mellows in the Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B in Boolabawn on Friday.

The New Ross town men started much brighter when Dylan Egan's shot rebounded off the post kindly to him and he struck low to net on three minutes.

That was just before midfielder Eoin Kelly pointed twice, one from play and a placed ball from distance to leave the New Ross men five points clear within the opening minutes.

Liam Mellows opened their account when half-forward Brendan Halpin pointed first from a free and then from play 35 yards out. Stephen Somers replied from the left sideline before Jesse Foley hit back for Liam Mellows after a fine catch and score from close range to leave the Geraldines ahead by three within the first quarter.

Eoin Kelly added two points, one from play and another from a long-distance free to extend the gap. Liam Mellows' only goal came on 20 minutes when Jesse Foley capitalised on a mistake in the Geraldines defence and he buried to the net from close range to leave it at 1-5 to 1-3.

The Geraldines then hit two quick-fire goals within three minutes as David Crowdle netted after a fine individual run and then Dylan Egan bagged his second after a rebound off goalkeeper Dylan Gregan to leave the score 3-5 to 1-4.

Jesse Foley added a fine score from play on the sideline before Eoin Kelly and Brendan Halpin exchanged frees to leave the Geraldines six points up at the break.

Just after the re-start Anthony Purcell got the Geraldines' fourth goal when his high ball into the square dropped into the net after Dylan Gregan was disrupted by David Crowdle, and they now led by nine.

Brendan Halpin then posted four successive scores, three placed balls and one from play, to reduce the arrears. Mark Purcell then drew a great save from Gavin Stamp, before Stamp then pointed from play.

Danny Conway grabbed a nice team score and Halpin pointed again just after to leave it 4-7 to 1-12 with 15 minutes remaining.

Scores dried up in the last quarter as the New Ross men defended well while Jesse Foley, who was a threat all game, registered from play and Halpin from a free just left two between the sides.

Eoin Kelly pointed a free in stoppage time as the Geraldines held out for the win.
