Anyone who tipped Kilanerin for a rapid return to Senior ranks after they were relegated last year is still saying 'I told you so', after they made it four wins from four played in the Lodgewood Engineering Intermediate football championship Group B by beating Clongeen in Bellefield on Saturday.

Kilanerin 1-13 Clongeen 0-10

The north county men had six points to spare in a game where they were clearly the better side, but yet it could all have been so much different if Clongeen hadn't wasted two great goal chances at crucial times.

The first was on 25 minutes, after they had struck three points in a row to begin a fightback from being 1-5 to 0-2 behind. Paul Curtis played a one-two with Jim Bennett as he made his way towards goal, only to be hauled down illegally.

Up stepped Páraic Cullen to take a penalty that could have put his side level and made a real game of it, but he blasted the kick high and wide, and instead Kilanerin finished the half stronger, eventually going in with a lead of 1-7 to 0-6.

Their lead stretched to six points in the third quarter (1-11 to 0-8), with one of those points being a vintage Matty Forde turn-and-shoot, and another coming when the impressive Bobby Hughes pounced on a poor kick-out that followed that Forde score.

Paul Curtis and Jim Bennett (free) then hauled Clongeen back into it at 1-11 to 0-10 with ten minutes to go, meaning a goal for them at that stage would really have set things up nicely.

They looked odds-on to get it too when Liam Murphy and Jamie Keating combined to set up Paudie Cahill in front of the Kilanerin goal, but the ball skewed off Cahill's boot and went badly wide.

That was it from a Clongeen point of view, as they had no further score and barely even any further chance, while at the other end, Jim Hughes and Dean O'Toole wrapped things up for Kilanerin with a point each.
