Kilmore overhaul major deficit to record victory

Jason Goodison

On a day of turnarounds in Tagoat, Kilmore were the first side to overhaul a large deficit and book their place in the Junior 'A' Hurling Championship Semi-Final at the expense of St. Fintans.

Kilmore 1-14 St. Fintan's 4-4

The seasiders found themselves eleven points down at one stage during the first half but battled back with an array of finely crafted minors and a decisive goal in second half injury time.

The Mayglass men, who shot out of the starting blocks, notched up an impressive 3-4 inside the opening twenty minutes. Early Jim Rossiter and Niall Moore points were proceeded by a triple header of goal bound strikes.

John William Rowe found Peter Goldsmith for the first before Padraig Rossiter kicked home from close range. The treble was completed by Moore, capitalising on a goalkeeping error to pull into an empty net.

When Moore added St. Fintans fourth minor in the 20th minute to increase their lead to eleven, they could not have imagined that they would only make the scoreboard change once more and would not be leaving without a victory.

Aaron Goff and Robin Cousins narrowed the margin before half-time but the real Kilmore resurgence began after the interval. With the wind at their backs, Kimore began to pick off points and gradually edged back into contention.

Five Goff dead balls and additional aid from Mark Sinnott and Tom White levelled the sides before St. Fintans only score of the half. Franks Staples feeding Jason Pettit who finished low.

However, glory was to favour the side in green and black. Tom Byrne narrowed the gap until White forced a late, injury time penalty in the Fintan's area.

Captain Stephen Cousins finished low to the left of goalkeeper Rich Kelly to give Kilmore their only lead of the game and secure a one point win.
