Last-gasp goal stuns U-16 girls
Kilkenny 2-12 Wexford 1-12
A last-gasp goal condemned Wexford to defeat against old rivals Kilkenny in the Leinster Under-16 'A' camogie championship group stages in Clara on Sunday.
With the scores tied at 1-12 apiece after a heroic Wexford fightback in the second-half, the hosts nabbed a cruel late winning goal to leave the Slaneysiders sweating on the outcome of the Offaly versus Dublin game to see who progresses to the provincial final.
It was tough going against the breeze for the visitors in the opening half. They battled away with Anais Curran and Lauren Murphy opening their accounts with a couple nice points from play, but Kilkenny pressured Wexford and got their scores.
Oulart-The Ballagh youngster Curran added a brace of frees before the break, but despite solid goalkeeping from Aoife Mahon and superb wing-back play by Laura Doran, Wexford found themselves 1-8 to 0-4 behind at the interval.
When seven points down at the break, an early goal is often the key to getting back in the game. Wexford managed to get one when Katie Smyth found the net within a few minutes of the re-start.
That lifted the visitors and they added three Curran dead-balls and another Lauren Murphy point to narrow the gap to just one in the final quarter (1-9 to 1-8). While Kilkenny responded to move three clear again, Wexford were came back fighting.
Katie Smyth registered a minor, and then Megan Cullen picked out Anais Curran with a superb line ball and the hotshot pointed. Another Curran dead-ball was soon followed by a second classy Smyth point, this time off her left side, to leave the game level (1-12 each).
However, it wasn't to be for Wexford as Kilkenny grabbed a late winning goal to send the visitors home disappointed. The Slaneysiders will contest the Leinster final, provisionally set for May 8, if Dublin beat Offaly in their back fixture.
