Minor hurlers make bright start away to boys in blue

The Wexford Minor hurlers made a very bright start to the Leinster League in the U.C.D. grounds in Belfield on Saturday with a convincing victory over Dublin.

Building on a strong start to establish a 0-12 to 0-2 half-time lead, they came under more pressure on the re-start but always looked the more likely to succeed despite introducing a string of substitutes.

Murtha Doyle, Ciarán O'Connor ('65) and Joe O'Connor fired over the first three points, and it was 0-7 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter after further scores from Ciarán O'Connor (two, one free), wing-back Ciarán Kirwan and Seamus Casey.

Wexford dominated the remainder of the half as unanswered points from Jack Pettit, Joe O'Connor, Ciarán O'Connor (two) and Darren Codd left them ahead by ten at the break.

Pettit and substitutes Rory O'Connor and Liam Pender were on target in the third quarter, but Dublin had the margin down to 0-15 to 0-8 with 13 minutes left.

Murtha Doyle and Caolán Carty had points sandwiched in between two efforts from the home side before Seamus Casey set the seal on victory with a 58th-minute goal.
