No mercy shown by rampant Réalt

Dean Goodison

Kilanerin went into this Joyces Expert Intermediate 'A' football championship clash against an already-qualified Réalt na Mara with an outside chance of making the quarter-finals in Páirc Uí Shíocháin on Sunday.

They might even have had a chance to allow themselves to 'dream big' when John Hegarty and Killian O'Toole combined to play in Michael Hegarty for a goal - the opening score of the game in the sixth minute.

However, reality bit back for much of the remainder of the game as a ramshackled Kilanerin were left chasing a fitter, younger Réalt na Mara around, despite the Ballygarrett boys failing to find as much as third gear.

Second was all they needed, especially with Pat Naughter kicking a fine range of points. Indeed, one was so deep into the right-hand corner that the former county man was closer to being blocked out by the Gorey scoreboard than any of the Kilanerin defenders.

After the early goal for the underdogs, Réalt na Mara hit back with a couple of frees and then took the lead when Jack Doyle hauled in Jack Hobbs' high, floating ball and fired past Eoin O Lúasaigh.

The Kilanerin stopper saved far more than he conceded and wouldn't look out of place in their first team's goal.

Three more Naughter points had his side 1-5 to 1-0 ahead at the interval. Seán O'Brien and Tom Sinnott hit the target after the re-start as the lead swelled to nine before John Hegarty pulled one back.

Cormac Moore ended the scoring with seven minutes to go but the drama was far from finished as Pat Forde and Stephen Redmond picked up second yellow cards for not wearing a gumshield - the culmination of a game-long crusade by referee Justin Heffernan against teeth-wielding footballers.
