Pat's maintain good start

Brendan Furlong

The supreme accuracy of wing-forward John Doyle helped St. Patrick's to a hard-earned two-point victory over Buffers Alley in this exciting Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B game played in Ballygarrett on Saturday.

St.Patrick's 0-17 Buffers Alley 1-12

Apart from the accuracy of Doyle there was little to choose between the respective sides as the Alley's second string made life difficult for their neighbours St. Patrick's. The eventual winners only managed to edge clear in the closing ten minutes of an entertaining and keenly-contested game.

Points from Andrew Doyle and two, one free, from John Doyle, gave St. Patrick's an early 0-3 to nil lead, but the accuracy of Keith Burke was to keep the Alley in contention, with the eventual winners leading by 0-6 to 0-4 at the end of the opening quarter.

St. Patrick's got the upper hand in the second quarter, adding points through John Doyle (free and '65) along with Tomás Morris and Richie Flood, while Burke managed a pointed free in between, leaving the eventual winners with a 0-10 to 0-5 interval lead.

St. Patrick's extended their lead through points from a Doyle free and Tomás Morris, but Burke's accuracy kept the Alley in touch.

And when John Moran found the net with a 39th-minute effort, just three points separated the sides (0-13 to 1-7).

Two Burke points (one free) followed to leave the minimum separating the sides entering the closing ten minutes, but with Doyle pulling the strings and tagging on three further points (one free), St. Patrick's went on to record their second successive victory of the campaign.
