Poor start for U-16 side

Wexford got off to a bitterly disappointing start in the Leinster Under-16 camogie championship in Kinnity on Sunday.

Offaly 4-11 Wexford 2-6

The game was supposed to be played a week earlier but was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in the Faithful county, meaning it was re-scheduled just a day after several of the side were involved with the Under-16 ladies' football team.

Maybe that played a part in a sloppy start that saw the visitors fall 2-1 to nil behind in the first few minutes.

Gradually Wexford got back into the game and pulled a goal back when Ciara O'Connor hit the rigging in the tenth minute.

Wexford ended the opening quarter with a Mollie Power point and started the second with a Lettie Whelan minor as they closed the deficit to a goal at 2-2 to 1-2.

Things got even better when Mikaela Lanigan found the net to level matters but Offaly eventually went in at the break 2-3 to 2-2 ahead.

When Wexford put together a run of three consecutive points at the start of the second-half, they took their first lead. Nora Higgins got the first of those scores, followed by Whelan with her second and one by substitute Kate Devereux.

Yet things went badly wrong after that burst of scores as Offaly scored a powerful 2-6 without reply. Nora Higgins registered her second point to stem the flow but the hosts finished with another couple of points to win by eleven.

Next up for Wexford are back-to-back home games. The fixture against Kilkenny is scheduled for this Sunday, expected to be a double-header with the county Intermediates who are also playing the Kittens, and the final game is against Dublin three weeks later.
