Rapps rule against Monageer
Rapparees secured their quarter-final spot with a comfortable seven-point victory over Monageer-Boolavogue in this Enniscorthy Electrical Wholesale Junior hurling championship Group A game at Ferns on Sunday.
Rapparees 0-19 Monageer-Boolavogue 1-9
Corner-forward Barry Nolan provided the scoring power as they totally dominated the second 30 minutes as their opponents' challenge faded.
The result now leave the losers facing into a real relegation battle to preserve their Junior status with just one game left to play against fellow strugglers Naomh Eanna.
After Alan Tobin and Barry Nolan (free) had landed opening points, Monageer-Boolavogue responded with four unanswered points through Cathal Walsh, two from Brian O'Loughlin and a Diarmuid Fenlon free, before a Patrick Walsh ground shot found the net.
Immediately on the puck-out they returned for a Cathal Walsh point to lead by 1-5 to 0-2 at the end of the opening quarter.
The sides continued to trade points but a late flurry of Rapps scoring through Joe Cullen, Anthony Peare, Barry Nolan (three, one free, one '65) and Tommy Foley left them with a 0-9 to 1-5 interval lead.
While Monageer-Boolavogue opened the second-half with a Seán Roche levelling point, the town side took the initiative and built a lead of 0-16 to 1-9 by the end of the third quarter.
They secured the victory with late points through Nolan (three, one free) and Joe Cullen to advance to the quarter-finals.
