Shelmaliers became the second side to book their spot in the Tom Doyle Supplies Senior Football Championship quarter-finals in Group B after conquering the Fethard challenge in Taghmon on Friday evening.

Shelmaliers 1-9 Fethard 0-9

The over-the-water side were indebted to A.J. Lehane's 22nd minute penalty that proved to be the difference between two otherwise evenly matched side.

Points from Lehane, Brian Malone and Tony Smith helped Shels into a 1-3 to 0-3 interval lead, although they did need goalkeeper Graham Lawlor to be at his best to keep out Mikie Dwyer's dipping shot.

The pendulum swung back and forth in the second half with Fethard getting within a point only for Shelmaliers to spring five ahead with nine minutes to go.

The New Ross District side did close to within two at one stage late on but they couldn't find the equalising goal in added-time that would have seen them book their quarter-final spot too.
