Shels shake off dogged Kilmore

Shelmalier and Kilmore served up a thrilling game of Senior football under lights in Ballymurn on Monday of last week.

Shelmalier 2-10 Kilmore 1-8

Kilmore dominated the early exchanges and got off to a perfect start when new acquisition Katrina Parrock, playing against her former team-mates, netted a rebound after three minutes.

Leona Tector and Deirdre McMahon had Shelmalier points which were cancelled out with a brace from Maria Byrne before a Ciara Codd point extended the Kilmore lead.

Deirdre Fox pulled off a number of fine saves in the Shels goal to keep them in the game during a sustained period of Kilmore dominance, with Grace Cardiff, Maria Byrne, Sharon Kehoe and Lauren Cousins particularly to the fore.

The Shels looked dangerous on the counter-attack and Michelle Murphy was at the end of a sweeping move to narrow the gap to the minimum (1-3 to 1-2).

Beth Cardiff extended Kilmore's lead before Maeve Quill started a move from her full-back position to finish off with a point at the other end. Parrock had the final say with a Kilmore point to leave them with a deserved lead of 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.

Majella Byrne extended Kilmore's lead within 20 seconds of the re-start. Shelmalier sprung to life with three points in a row from the evergreen Leona Tector to tie up the game by the 37th minute.

The Shels were now dominating the game with Róisín Murphy, Clara Donnelly and Ciara Neville constantly attacking and linking up well with Michelle Murphy, McMahon and Tector.

Clara Donnelly and Beth Cardiff exchanged points before Kellie Kearney, Donnelly and Tector extended the Shelmalier lead.

The Over the Water side wrapped up the game with a well-worked goal from Tector after 56 minutes.

Kilmore threw everything they knew at the Shels defence but with Catherine Doyle, Ciara Corrigan, Ceara O'Brien and Maeve Quill standing firm in front of Fox who pulled off a double save, there was no way through for the south county girls.
