Shels to start SHC defence v. Oulart
Mouth-watering Pettitt's SHC draw
Shelmaliers may be hoping to win back-to-back Pettitt's Senior hurling championship titles, but they were handed a very difficult group when the draws were made on Tuesday.
Interest in Group B will be huge given that it includes former champions Oulart-The Ballagh, but also featured are others who will have their sights set on achieving the ultimate goal of a Senior hurling title.
Ferns St. Aidan's will be hoping to re-capture the form of 2013 which eluded them at a crucial stage last year, and with Buffers Alley also ready to rebuild their former status it all adds up to what is an intriguing group.
Throw in last year's Intermediate champions, Shamrocks, along with Faythe Harriers, who will be determined to put a dreadful 2014 campaign behind them, only salvaging Senior status through the relegation play-offs; clearly this is a group that is sure to whet the appetite of hurling followers in the county.
St. Anne's may have failed at the final hurdle but they will still be one of the fancied sides to emerge from Group A where they are joined by two District rivals, Glynn-Barntown and St. Martin's. Rathnure have been sitting on the fringes in recent seasons and it's difficult to see them emerge this time around as serious title contenders, but neighbours Cloughbawn along with Rapparees are still capable of springing the odd surprise should they bring more consistency to their game.
Reigning champions St. Anne's will open their Tom Doyle Supplies Senior football championship campaign with a derby game against neighbours St. Fintan's, the side they saw off at the quarter-final stage last year.
These days it's difficult to put titles back-to-back in this grade given its competitive nature, since any one of six to eight clubs will entertain prospects of taking the title given the odd break along the way. Gusserane, last year's beaten finalists, are just one of those, and they are included in Group B where they have a difficult opening game against the 2013 champions, St. Martin's.
A number of other sides will be anxious to show their title credentials early on, such as Fethard, Shelmaliers, Castletown and Starlights, while Adamstown, with James Breen and Michael Furlong back firing on all cylinders, could emerge as one of the dark horses.
