In the past couple of months an innovative approach to supporting G.A.A. teams in Gorey Community School has been formulated.

A committee, 'Friends of Gorey C.S. G.A.A.', has been formed to assist with the preparation of hurling, Gaelic football, camogie and ladies' football teams in the school.

The committee consists of a member of each of the local G.A.A. clubs as well as the head of G.A.A. activities in the school, Michael Wall.

Financial benefit for the committee, and in turn for the various teams, has so far been supported by a contribution from the various clubs and individuals who have signed up as 'friends' by making an annual contribution of €50.

On top of this, the committee members are delighted to announce that they have secured a key sponsor for the next three years in the shape of Gorey Credit Union Ltd.

Commenting on the sponsorship announcement, teacher and committee member Michael Wall said: 'Our partnership with Gorey Credit Union will allow us to continue the development of our players. There's real momentum behind the G.A.A. teams in the school. This year alone we've won an All-Ireland camogie title and reached two Leinster hurling finals. It's great to have the support of Gorey Credit Union who are a great local community organisation'.

Tom Brennan, Marketing and Business Development Officer with Gorey Credit Union Ltd., is looking forward to the association. 'We're delighted to come on board as sponsor for the school G.A.A. teams. It's the biggest secondary school in the country and is a marvellous opportunity for us to attract new members to the Credit Union. We wish the teachers, students and the various teams well for the next three years and look forward to working with and supporting them.'

Readers will be familiar with some of the coaches currently helping with team preparations such as Matty Forde, J.J. Doyle, Anthony Masterson, Rory McCarthy and Mary Leacy as well as numerous teachers who help with different teams.

Any individual who wishes to sign up as a Friend of Gorey C.S. G.A.A. can do so by contacting one of the committee members: Michael Wall, Anita Carty (Secretary), Jim O'Connor (Tara Rocks), Mick Molloy (Naomh Eanna), Mick Kavanagh (Castletown-Liam Mellows), Seamus Hughes (Kilanerin-Ballyfad), Jim Hughes (Buffers Alley), Conor Carton (St. Patrick's), Ray Corcoran (Réalt na Mara-Ballygarrett) and Mick McGovern (Craanford).
