Tara Rocks top Group B

Dean Goodison

Tara Rocks came from behind to beat Faythe Harriers and win Group B of the Enniscorthy Electrical Wholesale Junior hurling championship in St. Patrick's Park on Friday.

Rara Rocks 2-12 Faythe Harriers 1-12

With one group game remaining the Gorey District side can no longer be caught and will meet the fourth qualifier from Group A in the quarter-finals.

The Harriers still have their destiny in their own hands and will move into the last eight themselves should they avoid defeat against Ferns St. Aidan's in their last round-robin game.

The Páirc Charman side played with the light breeze in the first-half and, despite three points from Jack Murphy, were being held to a tie (0-5 each) with five minutes of the 30 remaining.

However, they got on a roll towards the end.

With county Minor panel member Cormac Byrne scoring for the second time, Shane Howard pointing and Conor Halligan flashing inches over the crossbar, it seemed that the half-time whistle came at just the wrong time for the Harriers (0-8 to 0-5).

Yet the Wexford town club started the second period on the front foot too, moving 0-11 to 0-6 ahead. A Brendan Hobbs point changed the momentum and started a run of 2-4 without reply in a ten-minute spell for Tara Rocks.

At 0-11 to 0-9, Cormac Whitmore's ball into the goalmouth caused consternation and Patrick Fortune was the benefactor, latching on to the breaking ball before firing his side in front for the first time since the eighth minute.

Things looked bleak for the Harriers when the superb Brendan Hobbs picked up a loose Adam McDaid clearance and fired to the empty net (2-10 to 0-11).

Halligan smashed his side within a score with a 50th-minute goal but they couldn't find the second major they badly needed, despite a few half chances.
