U14s make good start
A strong and determined Wexford team overcame wet and windy conditions in Blackwater to beat Westmeath by 1-14 to 3-1 in the first round of the Leinster ladies' football Under-14 championship.
Wexford 1-14 Westmeath 3-1
Wexford played against the wind in the first-half and got off to the worst possible start. In the very first minute a 50-50 challenge saw corner-back Ciara Walsh and her Westmeath counterpart being taken off with injuries.
This seemed to affect Wexford and within five minutes they had conceded two goals with Grace Halligan and Zoe Gullinane hitting the net. Wexford composed themselves after that and some fine frees from Fiona Ryan and a goal from Lauren Murphy saw them lead by 1-6 to 2-0 at half-time.
With a strong wind in the second-half, Wexford hoped to pull away but were rocked in the second minute when Westmeath counter-attacked and scored a fine goal to draw level.
This appeared to wake up Wexford and from there on they took control of the match and with points from six different players they went on to win by 1-14 to 3-1. It was a fine win in windy conditions and they will hope to kick on from here in their quest for a Leinster championship.
There were some good performances with some fine free-taking from Fiona Ryan, great defending from Ciara Banville and some excellent long-range shooting in the second-half from the forwards as the Model county got off to the best possible start to the championship.
