Under-16 girls off the mark

Wexford secured their first win in the Under-16 Leinster ladies' football championship last weekend as they defeated Offaly on the road on Sunday in ideal conditions.

Wexford 2-11 Offaly 0-8

After losing their opening fixture to Laois by 6-6 to 2-5, it was cruical for the girls to get the win and they certainly didn't let their management down.

Wexford hit Offaly for 1-1 inside the opening four minutes, with Emily Coakley grabbing a point before Aideen Byrne hit the net with a well-taken goal.

Offaly hit back with fine points from their corner-forward Laura Garry to close the gap, however a fine point from Wexford midfielder Ann Marie Bennett after moving into corner-forward restored a three-point Wexford lead.

Offaly drew level with the impressive Laura Garry hitting three points without reply. Wexford wing-backs Cathy O'Brien and Gillian Barry landed crucial scores before the interval, with O'Brien goaling and Barry pointing to give Wexford a 2-3 first-half total. Meanwhile, Offaly had one more point before the break as Shauna Heffernan scored to leave Wexford leading by 2-3 to 0-6.

Wexford got a brilliant start to the second-half with three rapid-fire points as Kate Hendrick, Emma Codd and Aideen Byrne pushed them six in front. Shauna Heffernan briefly stopped the scoring with a point for Offaly before Wexford restored their six-point lead with another point from Byrne, and then substitute Siobhán Doolan got in on the scoring act to push Wexford in front by 2-8 to 0-7.

Offaly's final score came from midfielder Amy Gavin-Mangan, but Wexford saw out this contest in fine style with three unanswered points as Emily Coakley, Becky Hamilton and Emma Cousins registered for a nine-point win.

Wexford improved on their opening round display and will hope to continue the upward trend when they face Dublin in the next round on April 6.
