Wexford came out comfortably second best to a strong Kilkenny outfit in their Leinster Under-16 'A' camogie championship game in Piercestown on Sunday.

Kilkenny 5-14 Wexford 1-4

Kilkenny, who were coming off an impressive four-point win over Dublin in their opening game, simply had too much firepower for their Wexford counterparts to deal with.

The Kittens raced into a 1-5 to nil lead inside the opening ten minutes, with forward Danielle Morrissey playing an integral role by claiming three points and a handpassed goal.

Wexford answered back with one of their best spells. After a period of resolute defending, Lettie Whelan pounced on a Nora Higgins free and sent a low, driven shot past Leah Dunne and into the Kilkenny goal.

However, the visitors' deadly forward line could not be kept quiet for long. Morrissey and Eimear Farrell began to add points before a set of three goals in seven minutes ended the game as a contest.

Katie Brennan assisted Farrell for a neat finish before getting in on the act herself, scoring at her second attempt after Eimear Byrne had saved well initially. The trio of damning majors was completed three minutes later as Farrell claimed her second from a narrow angle.

Whelan, notching up two more points for the Model county, did little to improve a half-time scoreline of 4-11 to 1-2.

The second period was significantly quieter than the first and Kilkenny were limited to just four scores. Laoise Prenderville kicked home for her side's fifth goal while Morrissey and Farrell added further points.

For Wexford, the industrious Whelan fired over two more exquisite minors to bring her and her county's final tally to 1-4.

Wexford will be at home for their final group game versus Dublin on April 10.
