Women now 15 points behind first-placed Peas
SO Hotels Women's National League: Peamount United 2 Wexford Youths 1
Wexford Youths' miserable SO Hotels Women's National League season continued as they slumped to 15 points in arrears of Peamount United at the top of the table.
The double defending champions have been off the pace since they lost their first meeting with the Greenogue side this season, and things have gone from bad to worse, with this their third defeat to the champions-elect.
That's a long way from the form against the big teams last season, including a couple of victories and a draw against the Peas in the league.
However, things just haven't clicked for Wexford this term, and this looks set to be their worse league performance in a full season since the 2013-'14 campaign.
Wexford started on the back foot on Saturday, and Maeve Williams was forced into a save from Naima Chemaou.
However, the hosts did take the lead in the seventh minute when Megan Smyth-Lynch fired in a rebound after another stop by the Wexford 'keeper.
After working their way into the game, Wexford hit back at the mid-point in the half. Lauren Kelly supplied the cross for Kylie Murphy to knock in an equaliser.
Both sides looked to kick on, and Lauren Dwyer denied Áine O'Gorman while Murphy saw her shot saved by Niamh Reid-Burke.
Youths were looking for a penalty when Kylie Murphy went down in the box five minutes before the break, but nothing was forthcoming.
Frawley forced Reid-Burke into a fine save, and the Peas stopper also denied Rianna Jarrett as Wexford pushed before the interval.
The visitors continued to press after the resumption, as Kylie Murphy saw her shot deflected wide and Edel Kennedy was denied by Reid-Burke.
When Lauren Kelly released Jarrett into the clear in the 56th minute, the 'keeper came to Peamount's rescue again.
A long-range shot from Eleanor Ryan-Doyle found its way past Maeve Williams just after the hour mark as the hosts went ahead again.
Wexford had chances through Lauren Kelly and Ciara Rossiter to find an equaliser, but it didn't come as the visitors lost their fourth game of the league season.
Youths are back in league action this weekend when they travel to Limerick. At this stage it's important to keep things ticking over with a Cup still available to be won, but it's also time to start giving the youngsters vital game time, with the opportunity now right to give the likes of Aoife Slattery and Blessing Kingsley extended minutes.
