Wonderful individual goal from Reck puts Oylegate-Glenbrien on victory trail

A wonderful individual goal from Damien Reck sent Oylegate-Glenbrien on their way to victory in a hard-fought Enniscorthy Farms Systems Junior football championship Group A game in St. Patrick's Park, writes Dave Devereux.

Oylegate-Glenbrien 1-13 Starlights 1-9

Seconds after a Daithí O'Mahoney point had put Oylegate-Glenbrien ahead for the first time, the county Minor hurler waltzed his way through the Starlights defence in the 53th minute and unleashed a clinical low shot to the corner of the net to give his side a four-point advantage and put them firmly in the driving seat.

Starlights made the brighter start and held a 1-4 to 0-5 advantage at the interval, but a triple substitution early in the second-half helped to turn the tide in Oylegate-Glenbrien's favour.

After their introduction, two of those replacements, Fergus Heffernan and Pa Cullen, got the next three points on the board, which drew them level before they kicked on for a victory that leaves them sitting pretty at the top of the table.

The Enniscorthy town men badly needed the win and they got a real fillip in the tenth minute when Conor Ronan gathered an Ed Tobin pass and fired the ball past goalkeeper Eddie Mernagh to take a 1-2 to 0-2 advantage.

Oylegate-Glenbrien were guilty of some wayward shooting and poor decision-making in the first-half but they still managed to claw their way back to within a point by the 23rd minute, with Jim White, Daithí O'Mahoney and Peter Nolan all finding the range and Richard Farrell responding with a good point on the run.

Alan Tobin fisted the ball over the bar to finish off a flowing move, giving Starlights a two-point lead at the interval, and a Daithí O'Mahoney free shortly after the sides switched ends stretched that advantage to three.

Then came those inspired substitutions, with Fergus Heffernan floating over two nice points and Pa Cullen also getting on the scoresheet.

Starlights showed they also had players who could make an impact from the bench, with Killian Lett helping himself to two points and Graham Donohoe also getting in on the act.

However, the crucial score was the Damien Reck goal, which gave Oylegate-Glenbrien a four-point advantage which they comfortably held until the final whistle.
