Island exercise full control over Rathnure
OUR LADY'S Island were far superior to Rathnure's third string of hurlers than the final scoreline might suggest in their Junior championship clash at windy Clongeen on Friday last.
The southern seasiders were in front from pillar to post and rarely looked to be in danger of defeat until the closing minutes when Rathnure substitutes Anthony Westnott and Michael Flynn both found the net to close the margin to four points after a gap of ten had separated them at the midway stage of the second-half.
Points from Adrian Meyler, John Walsh and the Kinsella brothers, Liam and Colm, gave 'the Island' the better start but they were rocked by a goal from long range by Stephen Furlong in Rathnure's first attack after ten minutes.
Dean Maloney scored the only Island goal two minutes later and that helped to give them a seven-point advantage (1-7 to 1-0) by the end of the opening quarter, and at half-time they were still five points clear (1-9 to 1-4).
Liam Kinsella scored the point of the match from way out near the sideline at the start of the second-half and ten minutes later the lead had been extended to 1-15 to 1-5.
Simon Moore went low and hard from a couple of close-in frees with the sliothar being deflected over the crossbar by Noel Dempsey between the posts.
The introduction of Michael Flynn and Anthony Westnott added more life to the Rathnure forward division and when they scored a goal each from play it reduced the margin considerably at the end.
