UP TO 1,000 competitors are expected at a fun event in Castletown next month, which sees runners cover a distance of 6km along bogland, beach, woodland, and roads.

The Beach Bog Run takes place at Castletown on Saturday, October 27, at 1 p.m. and is being run by Castletown Liam Mellows GAA Club.

Chairman Michael Halpin said they expect entrants from across the country. ' Around 200 have signed up already but we're hoping 1,000 will take part.'

' They will run along Kilgorman beach for 1 km and then along the Ahare River, and across various obstacles, crossing the river in two places, and also through the forest, finishing at the Castletown GAA Clubhouse,' he added. 'It's a test of physical strength and endurance. It's not simple but it is something different.' Shower facilities and refreshments will be served at the clubhouse after the race.

The event is being run to raise funds for the club's underage section. ' The emphasis is on fun, and people from the age of 16 upwards can enter,' said Michael.

The event is registered with Run Ireland, and entry is €20. Intending participants can enter online at or phone 086 8268209, or pay on the day.

'We're trying to make use of the facilities we have in the local area,' said Michael. ' This will be something a bit different. It's a novel way of financing our underage section.'
