Rosslare Kettlebell: Massive congratulations to Rosslare Kettlebell Club athletes Colette, Sarah, Pat, Leanne, Evan and Caoimhe who did themselves and their club extremely proud at the Irish national kettlebell championships in Dublin with fantastic results.

Evan Kennedy-Power (eleven years old) started proceedings with 2 x 8 kg. long cycle and performed 83 solid reps. His previous P.B. was 68 reps. in February, representing a 15-rep. increase in the space of six months, and earning him a silver medal.

Pat Molloy put in an outstanding performance in long cycle 16 kg. with 135 reps., taking gold in the under 63 kg. cat and her first Irish national title.

Leanne Hennessy put in another super strong performance in long cycle 16 kg., achieving a new P.B. with 120 reps.

Colette Meyler performed 114 reps. in long cycle 16 kg. and came away with gold for her set in the +68 kg. cat and her first Irish national title.

Sarah Rea (17 years old) performed a whopping 146 reps. in 12 kg. long cycle and took gold and her first Irish national title. Sarah has started 16 kg. training and is very excited to move on to the yellow for October.

Caoimhe Van Der Bliake (15 years old) took double gold, having performed 190 reps. on snatch 12 kg. on Saturday (and injuring her hand). She went on to storm to victory again Sunday with 136 reps. in long cycle for her second Irish national title.

Rosslare Kettlebell Club members are coached by world champion and Master of Sport Clara O'Connor and train every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30 p.m. in Kilrane Community Centre.

They are always open to new members. For a club that is only one year old, they have achieved so much and it's only the beginning.

WANDERERS CRICKET

Wexford Wanderers firsts suffered a major blow to their hopes of league honours when they were defeated at home by North Kildare. At the start of play Wanderers were lying second in the league with the visitors in third place, but following this result the placings have been reversed.

Wanderers batted first and although most of the players got useful starts no one was able to go on to play a definitive innings. Usman with 25 runs and Nithin with 28 were the main contributors, as Wanderers were all out for 154 runs in the 44th over.

In reply, North Kildare's opener Hashmi was in brilliant form, striking six sixes in his innings of 84. When he was eventually out his team needed just 40 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.

However, some fine bowling from Alan Murphy and Nithin saw five further wickets fall but alas it was not enough as the visitors got home with three wickets to spare.

NEW ROSS RUGBY

New Ross R.F.C. will be hosting an evening of conversation between Ireland rugby coach Joe Schmidt, and former Munster, Ireland and Lions player Tony Ward, in Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, on Friday, September 8.

GOREY CRICKET

A great all-round performance from Philip Leonard led Gorey Cricket Club to victory over Clontarf 6 in Courtown recently.

Backed by a captain's innings from Anslem Diaz and a blistering spell of bowling from Khalid 'Khan' Ambroze, Gorey saw off the visitors' challenge to win by 98 runs.

Having been put in to bat in windy conditions, Gorey soon found themselves in trouble having been reduced to 62-5. Clontarf's opening bowlers had kept things tight early on and found reward through their changes in pace.

Leonard and Diaz stood firm however with a well-worked partnership of 90 to resurrect the Gorey innings, before some late hitting saw the home side finish on 163-7 from their 40 overs.

Rain had threatened for most of the day without seriously putting the match in danger, and things soon brightened up as the sun made an appearance for the second innings.

The visitors never looked likely of mounting a challenge though thanks to a superb display of fast bowling from Khan. He took 3-7, including three maidens in a row, to ensure that Clontarf's reply was over before it started.

Their chase collapsed to 65 all out in short time, with four wickets for Leonard wrapping up the tail, including a swirling, high catch from Gary Murphy to finish things off.

The result left Gorey mid-table in Leinster Division 14, with a home match against Laois up next.

Gorey (163-7 - 40 overs): P. Leonard 57*, A. Diaz 35, A. McDermott 3-33, J. McNally 2-35.

Clontarf 6 (65 all out - 28.2 overs): N. Sengan 17, S. Lisowiec 16, P. Leonard 4-8, K. Ambroze 3-7.

Gorey Cricket Club showed the depth in their batting on Saturday, as they overcame Laois 3 by 26 runs in their Division 14 match.

With five batsmen passing the 20 mark, Gorey assembled a big total of 197 all out from their 40 overs having been put in to bat.

The scoring was particularly impressive given the slow pace of the outfield, with many cracking shots ending up as twos.

A high total had looked in doubt at one point when Gorey had slipped to 69-5 on what was a decidedly heavy morning. A vital partnership was struck by Atilla Stahut and Ross Norman however, as the pair made 27 runs apiece to mount resistance to the Laois attack.

Some lusty hitting at the death from Khan Ambroze pushed the Gorey total to a defendable point. The big-hitting fast bowler reached 24 before being run-out off the last ball of the innings.

The sun started to shine during the lunch break and the outfield had noticeably quickened up for the start of the Laois innings.

An early run-out by Khan was just the beginning of a Laois collapse as they were soon 24-4 after some tight bowling by the captain, Anslem Diaz.

Laois' middle order fought back bravely in the middle overs as Hassan Munawar battled his way to a well-earned 73 and bolstered a tense chase.

The visitors had begun to reel in Gorey's total with a series of late sixes before Rashid Owais took three catches in four balls off the bowling of Reiner Garz to bowl out Laois for 171.

The match was played in great spirit and the win brings Gorey up to third place in Division 14.

Gorey's next match will be against league-leaders AIB in Courtown on September 2, with a starting time of 12.30 p.m.

Gorey (197 all out - 40 overs): R. Norman 27, A. Stahut 27, F. Khalid 2-27, U. Akram 1-32.

Laois 3 (171 all out - 38.4 overs): H. Munawar 73, A. Basit, R. Garz 3-34, A. Diaz 2-11.
