Craanford set to host county athletics finals

THE COUNTY gymnastics finals were held at the Acro Sports Centre in Enniscorthy at the end of May.

The events were efficiently co-ordinated by Joanne Mahoney and grateful thanks to her for all her hard work, beforehand and during the day.

She had excellent help from Marie Baker, Michelle Leacy and the members of the Enniscorthy Gym club, making sure that the events ran off very competently. Thanks also to Michael Brennan and Sarah Kenny from Arklow who came down to adjudicate.

There were good entries particularly in the Under-8, Under-10 and Under12 sections, but the participants in the boys' section were a bit scarce on the ground. The competitors came from Bree-Davidstown, CastlebridgeCrossabeg, Ring of Hook, Rowe Street-Bride Street, Piercestown-Murrintown, Kilmore, Enniscorthy, Ballycanew, Gorey, Clonard, Glynn-Barntown, Clongeen and Adamstown. The following were the winners:

Under-8 girls: 1, Fiona Doyle, Piercestown-Murrintown; 2, Tomai Slevin-Fleming, Ring of Hook; 3, Jennifer Murphy, Gorey, and Alayiah Waters.

Under-10 girls: 1, Robyn Cousins, Gorey; 2, Dervla Walsh, Gorey; 3, Nilan Slevin-Fleming, Ring of Hook, and Aoife Kavanagh, Craanford.

Under- 12 girls: 1, Karyn Murphy, Enniscorthy; 2, Katie-Mai McCabe, Bree-Davidstown; 3, Alison Doyle, Castlebridge-Crossabeg.

Under-14 girls: 1, Rebecca Crean, Glynn-Barntown; 2, Ciara Kavanagh, Craanford; 3, Leanne Cullen, Castlebridge-Crossabeg, and Rachel Woodburn, Glynn-Barntown.

Under-16 girls: 1, Sadbh O'Flaherty, Glynn-Barntown; 2, Tara Doyle, GlynnBarntown; 3, Shauna Rafferty, Enniscorthy.

Under-8 boys: 1, Rúairí Martin, Gorey; 2, Ruadhan Comerford, Gorey; 3, Robert Mitchell, Enniscorthy.

Under-10 boys: 1, Taylor Dench, Ballycanew; 2, Jamie Doyle, Gorey; 3, Louis Pinaqui, Castlebridge-Crossabeg.

Under-12 boys: 1, Daniel McCarthy, Glynn-Barntown; 2, Tim Gilhooly, Glynn-Barntown.

Under-14 boys: 1, Diarmuid McDonald, Glynn-Barntown; 2, Josh McLoughlin, Glynn-Barntown.

The county athletic finals take place in Craanford on Saturday next, June 23. By now all Areas should have collected their Area numbers from Jason Moran. Stickers are to be displayed on the front of the Area singlets.

Helpers are needed, so please make sure that your Area is sharing the load. The parade of the participating Areas will get the county athletic finals off to a great start.

All Areas are asked to assemble for the parade by 9 a.m. and it will move off at 9.15 a.m. Events will take place immediately afterwards following the presentation of the awards for best turned out group, best banner and runners-up, and by the official opening of the games and words from the guest speakers.


Monday, June 18, to Monday, June 25: second rounds of outdoor team events in Leinster. Winners of the first round competitions are at home to Carlow.

Saturday, June 23: county athletic finals in Craanford.
