Fog doesn't put a damper on greyhound action

Heavy fog on Monday of last week put racing in jeopardy right up to start time. However, it lifted enough for the action to go ahead and the first round of the Ballagh Boxing Club Open Unraced Stake was featured with all five heats run.

Some very nice novices were on display, and Ballinclare Solo ran out a convincing winner of heat one. Despite missing his start, he went to the front early in the back straight, showing a nice burst of pace to score well in a good 29.01.

The young Piercestown Leaf did well to overcome the tricky trap six box to weave her way to the front and score in 29.36 in heat two.

Fleeting Prince took heat three; he had to track the flying early leader Ballinamona Star into the back straight and put in his winning challenge approaching the third bend before going on to score in a good 29.13.

Heat four saw another flying starter when Katch Up Marley led around the first corners, opening up a four-length lead, with Cougar Royal going into second and closing down the leader into the third bend with a fine burst of speed. Cougar proved the stronger on the run to the line to score in a best of the round 28.98.

The fifth heat went to Money Spinner who went into the first bend tracking behind Piercestown Moll. After a battle with the latter, he got home by a length and a half in the end from the staying on 4/5 favourite Stripe Mary in a time of 29.23.

The second round continued last night (Monday) and it looked a very competitive stake with some very nice pups on display.

On Thursday night Lambstown Joy returned to action in race seven, an A2. He has been off the track for a while but returned to overcome the tricky trap six box to record his sixth win from seven outings.

He was quickest over the standard distance on the night, in a time of 29.08, one to keep on the right side of in the coming weeks it seems.
