Gala event of the year attracts a great crowd to the dog track
THE PETTITTS Supervalu Gala Night last Thursday was a huge success with a great crowd turning out and the weather played its part for a very enjoyable night.
The action on track saw the start of the Future Champion Unraced stake races one to eight. Heat one and there was a red hot favourite in trap one - Bandicoot Omega - owned by Ann Cullanan (kilkenny). She went up well to dispute with res E trap six Dans Gal and turning down the back Bandicoot asserted to go away to score by four lengths from I Confess who just got up for second in 29.21.
Heat two was a more open looking heat and it was another win for trap one as Trewmount Snap owned by Mervyn Watson (Duncannon) came home a nice four and a half lengths clear from Norristown kid in 29.60.
Heat three and trap one runner Kingsmill Messi was heavily backed close to the off and his supporters must have had a fright as he walked out of traps however he made rapid headway up the rail and pushed through on the inside at the first to go on into the second with the other runners involved in barging Kingsmill quickly put this race to bed going on to score by seven and a half lts from Mccarthy's Bridge in a good 29.25 for owners Aiden and John Roche (Barntown).
Heat four was a four dog race and hot favourtie Barefoot Henry trained by Paul Hennessey but it took him until the final bend to shake off Rock Crest before scoring by six and a half lengths in a fast 28.92.
Heat five was a buzz as Piercestown Buzz owned by Seamus Whelan was sent off the hot favourtie and he won as a hot favourite should as he led and scored by five lengths from Tagaong Drogba in a fast 28.97.
Heat six saw another favourite win as trap three runner Newin Gold owned by john Walsh led and ran out a clear seven lengths win from Dysert Emily in 29.49.
Heat seven and the favourites did not do well as trap three Kuda Slippy owned by Peter Fitzgerald (Waterford) led and ran out a three and a half lengths winner from Ullid Doodle in 29.52.
Heat eight was another four-dog race and Clonroche Blaze owned by John Kehoe (co wex) led but had to battle to hold the challenge of Tagalong Essien in 29.28. This Thursday night's second round will tell a lot more about what these novices are made of.
The ninth race was the final of the A4 Pettitts Supervalu stake of €1000 and it was a good finish trap three runner La Belle Ace owned by Miss Josephine and William Kearns led but had to pull out all the stops to hold res G Tumper Imp who ran on well and only a neck separated them on the line in 29.41.
Race ten was the final of the Track Supporters A3 stake and Kilpatrick Rizz owned by Ella O'Connor (Crossabeg) produced the run of the night as she led and raced right away to beat related star by seven lengths in a superb 28.74 and maintain her unbeaten run of four wins from four starts.
Race eleven an A1 and Piercestown Con broke well to lead and race on to score a fine win from Rockside Jono in a fast 28.90 Sharon Shinkin (Piercestown) to record a nice Piercestown double on the night.
