While Saturday ladies got a very windy day, unfortunately the weather on Monday and Thursday was also wet and windy and not very favourable for golf. Still, a few very courageous ladies braved the elements on Thursday and went out!

Thursday, March 12, 18-hole stableford sweepstake: 1, Linda Friel (9), 33 points; 2, Jane Duignan (29), 29 points; nearest the pin, Linda Friel, 4.27m. Well done ladies.

Thursday, March 19, is an 18-hole three-person waltz competition sponsored by Sam McCauley Chemists, with one to score on the first, two to score on the second and three to score on the third holes.

It is also our first presentation of the year which will take place at 7.30 p.m. followed by our guest speaker, Mary O'Connor, a qualified yoga instructor, with a view to commencing classes in the clubhouse, will talk about how beneficial yoga is to golfers. This may help members of teams who are about to start matches so you can be nice and relaxed before heading out, so please come along and join in.

Sunday, March 22, will see the start of the nine-hole qualifying competition and, like Thursdays, specific scorecards and designated time slots are available for this competition which will be held every Sunday except Bank Holidays and open weeks.

Following last year's huge success, bridge is being held in the clubhouse on Wednesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. sharp. The cost is €5 which includes tea or coffee. This is a fundraiser for ladies' teams, so please come along and support our ladies.

Ladies, if you are interested in playing in the very popular J.J. Devereux matchplay competition, please have your entry in by Thursday, April 9, with details on the noticeboard in the ladies' locker room.

A sign that the golfing season is near is that the G.U.I. has issued the draws for the inter-club competitions. The following are the Rosslare fixtures:

Barton Shield, area finals in Arklow, Saturday, May 23; Senior Cup, we meet Wexford in Carlow, Saturday, June 27; Junior Cup, area finals in Coollattin, Saturday, June 6; Barton Cup, at home to Callan in first round; mixed foursomes, away to Borris in first round; Pierce Purcell, area finals in New Ross on Saturday, May 16; Jimmy Bruen, area finals in Courtown on Saturday, June 20.

The 18-hole competitions start next weekend with a singles on Saturday and a gents' Scotch foursomes on Sunday.

On March 17, St. Patrick's Day, Wexford Golf Club will host an 18-hole four-person scramble. The restaurant will have Irish stew and bacon and cabbage on the menu while on the big screen we can watch the All-Ireland Club finals from Croke Park. Come and join us in Wexford Golf Club.

This week sees the start of our free sub competition over three days from Friday, March 20, until Sunday, March 22. This is a strokes competition over 18 holes and we wish all who take part the best of luck over the three days.

Wexford Golf Club Garden Angels are seeking helpers. Our Garden Angels are looking for some extra hands to help out with light weeding and general care of the shrubbery and flowers on the course. No need for gardening expertise! Can you help? Contact Martina on 087-9107211 or any of the Garden Angels if you wish to give a hand.

Congratulations to Tom Rowe (23) for winning the weekly €50 in the Find the Joker draw. The jackpot for next week stands at €1,648. The Joker draw is open to members and visitors and takes place every Sunday at 8 p.m. in the clubhouse. The next draw will take place on Sunday, March 22.

Next Saturday sees the final round of the Six Nations with Ireland travelling to Scotland to play at Murrayfield. Wexford Golf Club will be the place to be to see the match on the big screen at 2.30 p.m.


St. Helen's Bay was alive with laughter and song on Saturday morning as our golfing year was officially opened with our Captains' drive-in. Aidan and Bernie arrived in style, resplendent in their 'Gangsta' attire, and were welcomed by a large crowd of members and friends.

A fun-packed nine-hole scramble preceded the drive-in and, following an entertaining address by the silver-tongued Aidan, a wonderful day was rounded off with tasty food and lively music.
