Locals see off visitors
THE VISIT of the Glos Stars team from Gloucestershire was the highlight of last weekend's badminton, with the visitors taking on a Wexford Badminton Association selection in Ramsgrange Community College.
To add to the occasion, the visitors were greeted on Saturday morning by new Junior Minister Seán Connick and Wexford Badminton Association County Chairman, Nicholas Murphy.
The Glos Stars team captain, Chris Dickens, introduced his team to Seán and Nicholas and then it was the turn of the home captain, Frankie Morrissey.
As a memento of their first visit to Wexford, the visiting Glos Stars manager, Ian Day, was presented with a beautiful painting of the three Irish tall ships by Seán Connick T.D.
With the opening ceremonies over, it was down to the serious business of the badminton matches with 34 games played on both Saturday and Sunday.
While competition was fierce in many encounters, the local side was the stronger overall and chalked up impressive victories on both days.
It was a much-needed boost for the Wexford Class 2 and 3 squads and the best possible preparation for the All-Ireland finals this weekend in Galway.
Plans are already under way for a return visit from the Wexford team to Gloucestershire next season.
