Monbeg Diego in flying form

Two finals were featured on last Thursday's card at Enniscorthy and, despite the very cold night, there was some very good action on track while the crowd enjoyed some very nice trio pay-outs.

There is no doubt the run of the night was in race six, the final of the Red Mills Racer A3, as the fast-improving Monbeg Diego followed up his impressive win of the previous week with an even more impressive win here.

He had to contend with litter brother Elite Sammy, himself a good winner the previous week, up his inside going around the first bend before asserting down the back to race home a clear four lengths to the good over the running on Ballinaboola Ace in a very fast 28.67. Both his wins have come from trap six and that is impressive.

Race five was the final of the Roban Insurance A4, and Slaneyside Adie showed first on the run to the corner after some scrimmaging on the bend. Bistro Bom took control off the second bend to go on to hold the latter comfortably by three lengths in a good 29.17.

Race nine was a cracking race, an A2, with only a length separating the first four over the line. Good Ability showed the way early on with a blistering split and led with trap one runner Sunfire Cosmic tracking him down to the final bend, while Piercestown Moll and Ballinclare Thea were also getting into full flight at this stage.

The run to the line was getting more desperate for long-time leader Good Ability as he tried to hold all challengers. It was Sunfire who got the verdict by a short head from Piercestown with Good Ability half a length back, as was Ballinclare, in a good time of 28.99.

It was very cold on the previous week, yet there was a good attendance at Enniscorthy Greyhound Track on Thursday night.

The new food bar has been a big hit with customers as good food at very good value prices is always a winner.

On the track local owner and trainer Patrick Roban enjoyed double success as Elite Josie put in a good finishing run to take race three in 29.40, while litter brother Elite Sammy was out and gone in race six. Favourite backers would have had little worries after his slick start, coming home two and a half lengths clear of the running on Ballinamona Star in a good 29.01.

Owner Philip Coleman has enjoyed a good start to the new season also as his Leigh Oslo followed up his win from the previous week in race nine, getting out well from his trap one draw to hold the persistent challenge of Kingsmill Haven comfortably in the end by two lengths in a good 31.64 (575 yards).

The fastest run went to the Eamon Doyle (Enniscorthy)-owned Monbeg Diego who was a wide margin winner of race five in a fast 29.08, leaving first bend trouble behind and clearly being on the up grade.

The first unraced stake will start this week and all the action will be covered next week.
