Nicholas claims gold

GOOD COUNSEL'S Nicholas Murphy won the Badminton England Gold singles event in Lisburn recently.

The Taghmon teenager fought hard to reach the final against Lisburn's Jonathan Harron.

They had already met in last month's Ulster Under-17 Open final with Harron taking the title on that occasion.

Last weekend's final was a threeset marathon, with both competitiors playing their best badminton.

Nicholas lost the opener 16-21 but fought hard to win the middle set 21-18 and continued his winning ways by taking the final set 2118.

So far this season Nicholas has won the Under-17 boys' singles in the Sligo Open on September 10, runner-up in the Ulster Open on September 18, and won the Under18 boys' singles in the Autumn Juvenile Open on October 2.

Wexford is well represented on the tournament circuit by this young man who is a talented all-rounder, as he also plays with TaghmonCamross under-age teams in hurling and football.
