On the fairways

New Ross Seniors: On quite a pleasant spring day in the month of February, 14 teams took part in our weekly competition on Thursday. We even had some nice breaks of warm sunshine at times which added to the enjoyment.

As usual, competition was razor keen but again we had one team running away with the spoils and outscoring all opposition to take home the 'Paddy' whiskey.

After the presentation of prizes there was a belated stewards' enquiry later that night (not involving the winning team) where one of the runners-up teams should have been disqualified for recording a total score for 19 holes instead of the 18 which they played.

How that discrepancy got by the card checker is a mystery to say the least. If the said gentleman was to get a job checking the forthcoming General Election tallies, there sure would have to be a lot of re-counts.

A correct total score of 95 points was sufficient for John Browne (12), Bob O'Dwyer (19), Shay Masterson (19) and Martin Forristal (21) to be clear winners. Five points behind in second place on 90 points came Paddy Shannon (10), Ger Freyne (17), Paul Laffan (20) and Tony Sexton (26).

The third spot went to the three-person team of Steve Travis (18), Richie Aylward (18) and Jim 'Dublin' Ryan with 88 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Noel Dunne on the ninth hole and Mick Long on the eleventh.

We have no outing next Thursday (February 18) as the Valentine classic is on that day and for the weekend. You book your own four-person team on the timesheet, and the normal game and time for us is back on Thursday, February 25.

The Seniors group send their sincere condolences to the Kehoe family on the recent death of Paddy who was a popular colleague of our Thursday outings for many years. We gave the late multi-talented sportsman a truly sporting send-off last Thursday with a sustained standing ovation in his memory - may his gentle soul rest in peace.

New Ross

There's no results to report this week as the Valentine's classic, which runs from Saturday, February 13, to Saturday, February 20, is still in progress.

It is a four-person team event, with two scores counting on all holes, and is open to men, ladies and visitors in any combination. Entry is just €5 for members and €15 for visitors.

Members are being strongly encouraged to support this competition due to the slow start to the year caused by the weather disruptions. Tee-times can be booked online and there is a great range of prizes on offer.

Next Sunday, the final round of the winter league takes place, with Patrick Bennett hoping to maintain his slender advantage over nearest rivals Patrick Whelan, Cyril Stafford and Jimmy Furlong.

The following weekend (February 28) a club singles takes place, and the golfing year starts in earnest on March 5 with the Captains' drive-in.

As the weather is beginning to improve we hope to see many more of our members taking to the fairways.

Our Captains' drive-in will be taking place on Sunday, February 28, followed by music and refreshments. The timesheet is open for booking and we hope you all come along to support our Captains, Liam and Stellah.

The launch event for our new caterers, Mossel Bay Catering, was as promised a fantastic evening of dining and dancing which was a sell-out midway through last week.

This week's competition is singles stableford and 32 golfers are partaking in the triathlon of golf, pool and darts, so a great night's entertainment is promised on Thursday for the pool and darts. A lot of practicing has been done over the last few weeks!

Ruth and her committee are very busy these days making sure that all the inter-club teams are entered in their various categories. It will not be long now until these competitions will be under way so here's hoping there will be a few more pennants coming our way in 2016.
