Piercestown-Murrintown on top

Community Games

The county final of the Under-13 chess competition was held in the Piercestown G.A.A. complex recently. Thanks to the local Piercestown-Murrintown committee for hosting the event and having the room nice and warm for the children, their managers and county officers, and for the nice cup of tea and refreshments.

Thanks also to Jim Doyle who co-ordinated the event and to the adjudicators, Carmel Nolan, Rory O`Mahony, Martin Humphries, Niall Griffin, and scorekeeper Fiona O`Mahony.

The local Area had four teams in action, with one team also from the Bree/Davidstown Area and the Ring of Hook.

The Ring of Hook team got off to a great start, as did the local Area's 'A' team, and they continued that trend and were neck and neck after round two on eight points each, with the local 'B' team on five and a half.

It was all down to the final round, and here the Piercestown-Murrintown team again amassed four points.

They were keeping a close eye on the Ring of Hook who scored two and a half points here.

The county title went to the Piercestown-Murrintown team on twelve points, with the Ring of Hook in second place on ten and a half points, closely followed by the 'B' team from Piercestown- Murrintown in third place on nine points.

Bree/Davidstown and the 'C' and 'D' teams from Piercestown-Murrintown also gave of their best.

The winning team had Orla Griffin, Mia Quirke, Kevin O'Mahony, Ellie O'Mahony, Daniel O'Mahony, Bobby Crosbie and Grace O`Connor on their panel.

The runners-up from the Ring of Hook had Dan Nolan, Aaron Ely, Cora Foley, Molly Lynch and Caoimhe O'Connor as their players.

The third-placed team from the Piercestown-Murrintown Area had Anna Jeffares, Ryan Goodison, Sinéad Cullen, Ciarán Kelly, Jonah Berry, Tadhg O'Leary and Paddy Walsh on their panel.

Bree/Davidstown were represented by Travis McCauley, Katie Doyle, Oisín Harte, Conn Fraser, George Murphy, Cathal Evans and Riona Kehoe.

The 'C' team from the Piercestown-Murrintown Area had Ellen Coleman, Seán Collier, James Quirke, Sarah O'Mahony, Chloe McCluskey, Chloe Curtin and Aodhán Sane on their panel, while the Piercestown-Murrintown 'D' team featured Riley Murphy, Shane Murphy, Leanne Butler, Lucy O`Hanlon, Molly Quirke and Abigail Parker-Walsh.

Areas should be checking to see if they have entries for handball, table-tennis, badminton, indoor soccer and futsal.

Other events coming up include table quiz, art and handwriting, swimming, gymnastics, and stage events.

The county swimming finals take place on March 27 at Enniscorthy pool at 10 a.m. There is a deadline of March 16 for receipt of entries.

The art and handwriting competitions take place in Castlebridge National School on March 11, and times will be given out closer to the event as soon as entries have come in.

The stage events will be held in Bree Hall on April 21. The county athletic finals will be held on June 24.

Garda vetting for a number of volunteers, at Area and county level, is now out of date. A reminder to Area Secretaries to check and ensure that their officers and team managers and anyone helping out in any way is vetted with Community Games.

The county Secretary has a full list of all vetted, so if you need to know who is or is not vetted in your Area, please make contact.

Volunteers not vetted cannot help out at any event. This is a very important notification and no Area should ignore it.

Please ensure that all your volunteers are aware that they must be Garda vetted to protect them and the children under their care.

A number of Areas have still to affiliate. Please note that the closing date to headquarters is March 31.

If your Area is not affiliated by this date, then you cannot compete in any of the summer events, so please get affiliated and don't disappoint the children in your Area.
