Conditions were perfect for the Wexford Schools cross-country championships at Good Counsel College, New Ross. The skies were blue and the low winter sun did its best to take the chill out of the air. Underfoot, the sod was firm.

Numbers were up in most races as was the standard of running up front. The latter continues a general upward trajectory which has been very much in evidence in under-age distance running in recent years.

The overall best school result was very close this year, with Wexford C.B.S. winning by just one point from Good Counsel College and St. Mary's (New Ross).

With the steady hand of Linda Rogers on the tiller, the event was very well organised and stewarded thanks to Wexford Athletics volunteers and in particular United Striders volunteers who were there from before 9 a.m. setting up the course.

Wexford Civil Defence volunteers thankfully had a quiet day! As always Good Counsel College and staff, in particular Richard Barry, were excellent hosts.

One late medal-winning result from the All-Ireland cross-country in Abbotstown made one United Striders athlete very happy. Aedan Rogers, who placed 27th in the Under-18 race, was fifth man home on the winning Leinster team.

That really does crown a great national championships for Striders.
