Schools set for Sportshall finals
PRIMARY SCHOOL students from three schools in Co. Wexford will travel to Athlone International Arena for the National Sportshall Athletics Festival tomorrow (Wednesday, March 25).
Girls' teams from Adamstown National School and the Mercy, John's Road, Wexford will compete in the third/fourth class and fifth/sixth class categories respectively. The boys' teams come from third and fourth classes in Ballyhack National School, with Adamstown National School also competing in the fifth and sixth class category.
The athletes will face teams from throughout Ireland, having qualified from the Wexford selection competition earlier this month. With support from Sports Active Wexford, Athletics Wexford and the Athletics Ireland Regional Development Officer, over 40 students will get the chance to contend for national honours with their teams, competing in a variety of track and field events.
Sportshall Athletics, while relatively new to Ireland, is a major part of the physical education curriculum in the U.K., and this is the second year that Wexford have fielded teams at the national finals. The main emphasis of the events is on developing overall fitness and agility in a team setting, for young children.
Athletes learn basic skills in throwing and jumping and also undertake a series of relays and obstacle relays, making it competitive but fun.
It is also a great opportunity for the children to compete in the world-class indoor arena where international athletes regularly take to the boards.
Any schools who are interested in taking part in future Sportshall events should contact Sports Active Wexford on 05391-96557 for more information.
