Schools success

THE All-Ireland schools combined events championships were held at the Morton Stadium, Santry, on Saturday last, and the day produced excellent performances by the two athletes competing from Wexford.

Catríona Corcoran (who is with Bree A.C.) won a silver medal in the Senior girls' event, taking second place behind Karen Dumigan, while Colin Nolan (who is with Enniscorthy A.C.) won a bronze medal in the Intermediate boys' event, and this performance sees him qualify for the Irish team that will travel to Glasgow in December (there is no competition for Seniors, only Junior and Intermediate).

The Rathfarnham 5km road race was held in Dublin on Sunday morning last, and Fiona Kehoe (Kilmore A.C.) continued her excellent form by posting a P.B. for the distance. Fiona clocked a time of 17.14, which was almost 50 seconds quicker than the time she covered the same course in last year, and this saw her place well behind the race winner, Irish international Mary Cullen. Paul Gibbons and Eugene Doherty (both S.B.R.) also competed, clocking times of 17.06 and 18.00 respectively.

Tommy McElwaine and Willie Rossiter (both S.B.R.) were in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny, on Sunday last to compete at the St. Senan's A.C. open cross-country meeting. Both had good runs in the 8km Senior men's race, with Tommy taking third place and Willie finishing eighth.

Congratulations to Charlotte O'Farrell (D.M.P.) on being selected as Wexford Creamery athlete of the month for August. Charlotte represented Ireland with great distinction at the Celtic Games (an annual event that sees competition between teams from Athletics Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Ulster) that were held in Athlone on August 7, as she finished third in the girls' Under-18 hammer with a best throw of 45.65m.

The first day of this season's County Wexford cross-country championships takes place this Sunday (October 3) in Kilthomas, Ferns. Sliabh Buidhe Rovers are the organising club and races will be held for evenages Juveniles and Novice women and men.

Then it will be onto the Juvenile races (which will commence at 12.45 p.m.), with contests for Under-12s, Under14s, Under-16s and Under-18s. There will also be a novelty race for Under10s.
