Wexford double at ploughing match
THERE WAS a Wexford double at the national ploughing match, taking both first and second division titles in the horseshoes competition.
Division 1 was an all-Wexford final with four players from the Woodsmen club. John Joe Byrne and Johnny Giltrap beat Paddy O'Connor and Phil Mahon in a very close and exciting final.
It was a brilliant final, with outstanding throwing in the match which was level eight different times. Byrne and Giltrap came out on top, winning 21-18.
Division 2 was Wexford v. Donegal, with Matty Canavan and Johnny McKeon (The Forge) too strong for Pat Harkin and Dan Harkin on a scoreline of 21-8.
A total of 38 players competed. Winners and runners-up received Kildare Crystal.
The Wexford county ringers took place on Saturday last in Ferns.
Division 1: Paddy O'Connor (Woodsmen), 32; runner-up, Michael Redmond (unattached), 25.
Division 2: Eddie Larkin (Monart), 16; runner-up, Seán Redmond (Woodsmen), 15.
There's an open doubles on Saturday in Herbert Park in Dublin, starting at 2 p.m. H.P.A.I. registered and unregistered players are taking part, open to both.
There is a Wexford County Board meeting in Ferns on Friday at 8 p.m.
