Whitefort Meg finds gap

Big crowds attended on both nights again at Enniscorthy dog track last week, and on Thursday some very close finishes occurred in many of the races and there was a great buzz around the place.

A few races stood out in particular. Race three was a very good one with trap one runner Whitefort Meg finding a gap on the inside between the third and fourth bends as trap five runner Tan Brown made his challenge on the outside of the leaders at the same time.

Whitefort proved the stronger up the home stretch to score from the latter in a time of 29.51.

Race four then produced a great battle between Ashfield Magic and Critical Casie over the 575 trip. Critical led into the first bend with Ashfield making his way into second spot.

Then the battle between the two started from the second bend with neither giving an inch. The result went to a photo finish as they flashed over the finishing line, with Ashfied Magic gaining a deserved victory in a time of 31.94.

The photo finishes continued into race five as Bluestormrising got out well from trap three and led all the way until Kiltrea Maura loomed up between the final bends. And with the Kiltrea runners always finishing strongly, Maura would have been favourite in punters' minds from there.

However, while Kiltrea did get the win by a head, Bluestormrising battled all the way to the line. The time was a good 29.15.

There was no let-up in the close finishes in race six as Tomorrows Seán went to the lead off the second bend and ran on gamely to hold off Toker Lark by three-quarters of a length in a good 29.17.

Old boy Piercestown Seán, nearing his fifth birthday, showed the young ones he is still a force to be rekoned with as he got out well in the opening sprint to go on to record his 22nd race win in a useful time of 19.24 (350 yards).

Trainer John Kavanagh recorded a nice double, taking the last two races on the card when Mango Mars showed a nice burst of speed down the back to go on to get the better of reserve Brackenstone Ned in 29.58, while Vimmer Busa led in race nine and did enough to hold the strong finish of Elite Taylor in yet another close call finish to round off a great night's racing.
