Winner takes all for ladies

Gorey 12 Barnhall 0

The Gorey ladies welcomed Barnhall on Sunday, knowing that only a win would keep their play-off hopes alive in Division 2 of the Leinster Senior League.

In tough handling conditions, Gorey started well, bringing the play to Barnhall. The visitors stood firm for some time, but the pressure eventually told.

Just on the halfway line they gave away a penalty and, with a free play, Lauren Farrell chipped the ball over the Barnhall defence, re-gathered and sprinted clear to score a try under the posts which was converted by Jesse Foote.

From the re-start the game ebbed and flowed, with both sides finding that handling the ball was difficult in the conditions.

Some strong play from the Gorey pack allowed the ball to go out wide, and Noreen Nethercott weaved through the Barnhall defence and crossed over to score the try. This score proved to be the last of the game.

After half-time Barnhall launched attack after attack and kept Gorey pinned in their own half for much of the second period.

Despite Barnhall's best efforts, the Gorey defence held firm and prevented them from scoring.

The game ended Gorey 12, Barnhall 0.

Gorey will now face Wicklow in a winner-takes-all match for a play-off position next Sunday in Gorey at 1 p.m.
