Wonderful weekend of top class badminton

ON EASTER weekend, the Wexford Badminton Juvenile County Championships took place in Ramsgrange Community College. Players came from clubs all across Wexford including Monaseed, Gorey, Taghmon, Terrerath and Shelburne.

On Good Friday, the under-11 and under13 players were in action, a day later on Easter Saturday it was the turn of the under-15 and under-17 players to play for the title of Wexford County Champion 2012.In the under-11 boys singles, Gorey players Evan Byrne and Jack Nolan met in the final. In a hard fought encounter, Evan Byrne won 21-18, 15-21, 21-12.

Evan and Jack teamed up in the boys doubles where they also reached the final. In the final they met another Gorey partnership, Micháel Kennedy and Sean Dowling. Evan and Jack narrowly took the title on a score line of 21-18.

In the girls singles Aime Butler from Gorey and Katie Smyth from Monaseed reached the final. Like the boys singles final, the girls final went to three sets. In the end Aime Butler turned around a first set loss to take the title 16-21, 21-7, 21-2.

Katie went one better in the girls doubles final, teaming up with Monaseed club mate Sarah Doyle to take the doubles title 21-15 against Shauna Dunne and Michelle Carty from Taghmon.

In the mixed doubles final, singles winners Aime Butler and Evan Byrne from Gorey overcame Martin Kavanagh and Katie Smyth from Monaseed 21-5. In doing so, Evan Byrne took his third under-11 title of the day.

Ryan Cogley and Clodagh Dunne from Taghmon dominated the under-13 category each taking three titles. In the under-13 boys singles final, Ryan Cogley defeated brother Brandon Cogley in three close sets, 21-16, 18-21, 21-15.

The Cogley brothers went on to defeat James Mckenzie and Robert Cogley, also from Taghmon, 21-17 in the boys doubles final.

In the girls singles, national under-13 champion Clodagh Dunne faced Elma Butler from Gorey in the final where she took the county title 21-15, 21-5.

The two girls also faced each other in the girls doubles final. Clodagh Dunne partnered Shauna Dunne, and Elma Butler partnered Aime Butler. In a close final the Taghmon partnership took the title 21-19.

Ryan Cogley and Clodagh Dunne secured their third titles in the mixed doubles when they defeated Brandon Cogley from Taghmon and Elma Butler from Gorey 21-8 in the final.

In the under-15 age group, again Clodagh Dunne from Taghmon dominated. Clodagh, having secured three under-13 titles did the same in the under-15 age group.

In the singles final she defeated Clodagh Dempsey also from Taghmon 21-1, 21-2. In the doubles final, playing with Clodagh Dempsey, the two Clodagh's defeated Nicole Dunne and Laura Roberts from Monaseed 21-5, 21-3.

Clodagh secured her third under-15 title, playing with Noel Dunne in the mixed doubles by defeating Brandon Cogley and Clodagh Dempsey 21-8, 21-8 in the final. The mixed doubles was Noel's second title, having earlier beaten Ryan Cogley 21-8, 21-9 in the boys singles final. Ryan Cogley did however take the under15 boys doubles title with his brother Brandon. They were tested in the final by Patrick O'regan from Taghmon and Bryan Furlong from Shelburne but won the title 21-13, 21-17.

Clodagh Dunne was again dominant in the girls draws in the under-17 age category, and Nicholas Murphy, also from Taghmon, dominated the boys competitions. Clodagh was tested in the girls singles final by Siobhan Creane from Terrerath, who took the game to three sets.

In the end, Clodagh turned around a narrow first set loss to secure the title with a score line of 19-21, 21-8, 21-15. The girls teamed up in the girls doubles where they faced Clodagh Dempsey from Taghmon and Elma Butler from Gorey in the final. The singles finalists won the doubles title 21-12, 21-12.

In an all Taghmon boys singles final Nicholas Murphy, despite carrying an injury, took the title 21-13, 21-15 against Noel Dunne.

Like the girls, the boys singles finalists teamed up in the doubles where they faced brothers Declan and James Carroll, also from Taghmon in the final. Nicholas and Noel took the title 21-12, 21-15.

In the mixed doubles final, Nicholas Murphy and Clodagh Dunne faced Declan Carroll and Siobhan Creane. Nicholas and Clodagh made it a clean sweep of under 17 titles by winning the final 21-14, 21-13.

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers that helped to run the Championships this year. Well done to all the players that took part and congratulations to all the winners, Wexford County champions 2012.


The Leinster Individual competition preliminary rounds will be held in Taghmon on April 22th commencing at 5pm. The format for play is as follows:

Division 4 Men's singles - Wicklow V Wexford (Rhyan Butler) - 5pm

Division 5 Ladies Singles - Wicklow V Wexford B (Siobhán Creane)-5pm. Winner will play Wexford A (Clodagh Dunne)

Division 5 Men's Singles - Wicklow V Wexford A( Benny Lawlor)- 5pm. Winner will play Wexford B(podge Masterson)

Division 4 Men's Doubles - Wicklow V Wexford A( Eddie Kent/lee Healy)- 5:30.Winners will play Wexford B (Paddy Wallace/ciaran Doyle)

Division 5 Men's Doubles - Wicklow V Wexford A (Benny Lawlor/podge Masterson)-5:30. Winners will play Wexford B (Brian/ollie Cummins)

Division 5 Ladies Doubles - Wicklow A V Wexford B (Siobhán Creane/louise Bennett)- 5:30

Wicklow B V Wexford A (Clodagh Dunne/corey Doran)- 5:30. Winners will play each other for place in Semi Final

Division 6 Men's Doubles - Wicklow V Wexford ( Brendan O Neill/nicky Sinnott)
