Senior beckons for girls in blue

AFTER AN eleven-year wait, Oylegate-Glenbrien regained Senior status when they won the Intermediate camogie championship under lights in Bellefield, beating a gallant Naomh Eanna side who really put it up to them in a closely-contested final.

Oylegate-Glenbrien started with great gusto and registered their first point in the opening minute from a Gretta Heffernan free, but this was cancelled out by Shannen Byrne.

Heffernan restored the lead from a placed ball and added her third in the 18th minute, but Gorey hit the front when Michelle Kehoe goaled shortly afterwards (1-1 to 0-3).

A second Kehoe major left the north county side in the driving seat, and they led by 2-2 to 0-4 at the break after Katie Sludds and Kehoe swapped points.

The experienced Barbara Sludds settled Oylegate-Glenbrien with the first point of the new half before Gretta Heffernan and Shannen Byrne exchanged frees.

Laura Dagger pulled back another Oylegate-Glenbrien before the key score arrived in the 47th minute when she combined with Lauren Moulton and Barbara Sludds before Catherine Kinsella handpassed to the net to edge them ahead by a point.

Gretta Heffernan pointed two further frees before Shannen Byrne picked off one from a '45 for Gorey. A further Gretta Heffernan free found its way to the net but was ruled out for a square ball infringement.

Gorey tried to claw back the deficit right up to the end but just could not break through the stubborn Oylegate-Glenbrien defence. Winning captain Siobhan Nolan was delighted to receive the cup from Co. Chairperson Rachel Hogan who wished Oylegate-Glenbrien the best of luck in the Leinster Intermediate championship.
