North End let chance slip
O'Neill's LFA Junior Cup
The North End United contingent will be kicking themselves after letting a glorious opportunity to beat Junior soccer kingpins Sheriff YC slip through their fingers, eventually losing 4-2 in a pulsating O'Neill's LFA Junior Cup third round clash in Clontarf on Sunday.
The Sky Blues raced into a 2-0 advantage against the AUL Premier 'A' giants and, although the Dubliners pulled a goal back before the break, the tie swung firmly back in North End's favour when Sheriff were reduced to ten men on the hour mark.
However, the metropolitans then levelled matters and although North End twice hit the woodwork the game went to extra-time.
It was ten versus ten again when Lee Wadding was shown a second yellow card, and Sheriff got their noses in front two minutes before the end of the first-half of extra-time. North End then threw everything at them, with Shane Dempsey hitting the crossbar, but with everybody pushing forward Sheriff caught them on the break to kill off the tie.
It was a tough defeat to take for the Wexford town crew, after their afternoon had started so brightly, racing into a 2-0 lead midway through the opening half. They took the lead when a Sheriff defender turned the ball into his own net, under pressure from Jason Murphy, and Shane Dempsey doubled their advantage with a superb free-kick.
Shamrock Rovers came away with a positive result against Sheriff YC's Premier 'B' team, winning 4-3 thanks to a double from Ricky Dwyer, a Jonny Dwyer strike and an own goal.
Corach Ramblers booked their place in the fourth round with a 2-0 win away to New Oak Boys, with Niall Harney and Adam Diskin getting their goals.
Gorey Rangers suffered the heartache of a 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat after a 1-1 draw away to Baldoyle, with Gary Doyle getting their goal.
Bunclody faced Blessington FC in the second round on Sunday, and came away with a 2-0 victory, with Johnny Melay and P.J. Mulhall getting their goals.
