Some minor surprises but no major cup shocks
An exciting weekend of cup football in the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer league saw a few minor surprises, but there were no major shocks in the fixtures played in the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 grades.
In the youngest of those age groups, three teams were able to claim a win against a side plying their trade one division higher. In the north county derby, Gorey Celtic of Division 2 piled five past Courtown as they moved into round two.
It was also a great day for a pair of Division 2A teams, with Fastnet edging past All Blacks 2-1 in Mayglass while St. Joseph's had a slightly easier day as they smashed six past Division 2 club Shelburne.
A couple of Division 1-only match-ups saw Gorey Rangers thump Wexford Albion 6-0 and Bridge Rovers beat Moyne Rangers 3-1.
North End, of the top division, also advanced to round two with a 4-1 win in Duncannon.
Division 1A also has a couple of survivors with Forth Celtic and St. Cormac's advancing past New Ross Town and Wexford Celtic. Ferns knocked out Newpark 4-2, Kilmore beat Rosslare Strand and Glynn Barntown 'A' won the battle against their own 'B' team to move on.
Kilmore of Division 2A were able to see off higher-ranked opponents as they beat Division 2 side Wexford Celtic in the Under-14 Cup.
Corach Ramblers of 2A advanced at the expense of Division 2 side Shamrock Rovers due to a walkover.
Ferns of Division 2 took Gorey Rangers 'B' all the way to extra-time and eventually prevailed 1-0. Wexford Albion 'B' (see above) and Taghmon, also of 1A, departed the competition but there was better news for the Division with success for Bunclody and Shelburne.
Three Division 1 teams took victories to reach round two. Gorey Rangers 'A' beat New Ross Town 4-0, Gorey Celtic saw off divisional rivals Forth Celtic by the minimum, and Wexford Albion 'A' smashed eight past St. Joseph's.
In the final first round game Cloughbawn accounted for St. Cormac's on a scoreline of 3-0, while the only game played in round two went the way of Forth Celtic 'B'. Rathnure beat Enniscorthy Town in the only Under-14 league game played Saturday.
It may have taken extra-time but Glynn Barntown of Under-16 Division 2 eventually overcame Division 1A club New Ross Town. Elsewhere, Shelburne needed penalties to edge past Gorey Rangers 'B'.
Wexford Albion, Forth Celtic and Moyne Rangers of Division 1 had relatively easy progressions into the second round. Elsewhere, Wexford Celtic 'A' of Division 1A also advanced with a 2-0 victory over Ferns.
Gorey Celtic dismissed Forth Celtic 'B' 5-1 in Murrintown and Camolin Celtic also moved into round two with victory against Enniscorthy Town.
In the league there was a win for Bree United (see opposite) while Curracloe and New Ross Celtic drew.
Attention now turns to the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 grades with first round cup action due to go ahead on Saturday morning. There will also be a limited number of league games.
