Vixens beat mighty Belvo under lights
WEDNESDAY NIGHT last saw the Wexford rugby ladies travel to the Old Belvedere grounds to take on the senior Dublin club side. As a result of the recent cold spell, the girls arrived to find quite a solid-surfaced pitch.
However, this was not to deter the Wexford ladies, when the referee declared the pitch playable.
Having gone in as the underdog, the Vixens knew it was of utmost importance that they pull together and put a strong, united front to their opponents, right from the onset.
Initially Belvo got off to the better start, using a phase of back play straight from the training ground to set their second centre up to sprint from the halfway line and score their first try. Thankfully the Vixens' customary conversion charge down was successful, keeping the score line to 5-0.
This was the shake-up the Wexford ladies needed, sparking them into action.
The Wexford ladies came to life, with fantastic passages of play being seen from the forward pack and back line alike.
Smart thinking and quick movement enabled full-back, Katie Fitzhenry, to break the opponents' defence line and sprint into their '22 to put a total of two tries on the board.
Once again powerful play was seen from the forward pack, with Fleur Moran and Áine Whelan getting their names on the scoreboard from picking off rucks, a penalty and carrying the ball in play.
There was no stopping their driving strength, with Moran thrashing over for two tries and Whelan bulldozing over, scoring her first hat-trick.
Each player put in 110% effort into the performance, making it difficult for an individual woman of the match award.
A welcome return of out-half Annie Rowe was experienced after a recent spell of a bad 'flu.
Well done girls, may the unbeaten record of this cup and league continue well into the future!
