Women on a scoring spree

Wexford Youths Women's F.C. moved four points clear at the top of the Continental Tyres Women's National League table with an astounding 10-0 thumping of bottom of the table Cork on Sunday at Ferrycarrig Park.

The first-half was only two minutes old when Carol Breen raced on to a through ball only to be tripped from behind by the recovering Cork defender, Ciara McNamara. Referee Seán Grant had no option but to show a straight red card, with the defender being the last player between Breen and the goalkeeper.
It took the Youths another eight minutes to break the deadlock, with captain Kylie Murphy scoring from a beautifully flighted free-kick into the back of the net. The game became a tight affair then with Cork frustrating the Youths up until the 40th minute when Carol Breen was on hand to extend their lead.
Things could only get better and within a minute, Claire O'Riordan had added another and on the stroke of half-time doubled her tally as the Model county side went in at half-time with a 4-0 lead.
The second-half started as the first had ended with Breen getting her second within two minutes of the re-start.
She then completed her hat-trick on 55 minutes, her first for the club.
Shauna Wall was soon to get in on the act and rounded off a terrific passing move by finishing expertly at the back post. O'Riordan was not to be outdone by Breen and she duly completed her own hat-trick not long later, while adding a fourth in injury time.
Becky Cassin also had time to get on the scoresheet in injury time due to a long delay because of head injuries to Shauna Wall and Norma Healy.
Next up for the Youths Women is a difficult away fixture in Castlebar on Saturday, January 31, against a resurgent Castlebar Celtic team.
