Surprise result in handball league as Buggy is beaten

THE ACTION continues a plenty in the Wexford 40 x 20 winter handball league with some of the big guns in the competition on show during the past week.

The surprise result came in the Premier division as Peter Funchion from Kells defeated last year's winner, Gavin Buggy, in their opening league game.

Daniel Fenlon laid his cards on the table in Division 1 with two fine wins, beating his Garryhill clubmate John Rossiter and Coolboy's Gary Donohue in a productive week on the court for the Carlow man.

Tony Breen finished off a game that was halted last week due to a wet court, as the Templeudigan man saw off Horeswood's Barry McWilliams.

In Division 3, Diarmuid Burke was another man with two wins, as he saw off Damien Kelly from Coolgreany and Michael O'Neill from Templeudigan.

Division 5 had three games last week and Sean Ryan (Garryhill), David Redmond (Templeudigan) and Ricky Barron (Barntown) won those with Barron sitting on top of the table with a 100% record so far.

John O'Neill (Goresbridge) beat Eugene English from Ballyhogue in Division 6, while in Division 7 Billy Rossiter from Ballyhogue was the winner in his game with Seamus Sinnott from St. Martin's.

Stephen Murphy took two wins in Division 9 over the past week, as the Castlebridge man defeated Mick Carthy of St. Joseph's and Jim Nolan from Kilmyshall.

There was also a win for John Murphy from Kilmyshall as he beat Tom Cummins from Horeswood.

Alan Armstrong from Davidstown had a fine win over Tommy Hardy from St. Mary's, while also in Division 10 Paddy Curran from St. Martin's was a winner over Eamon Codd from Bridgetown.

Division 11: Eoin Redmond (Kilmyshall) beat P.J. Lacey (St. Joseph's); Richard Ryan (Horeswood) beat Brendan Murphy (Castlebridge).

Division 13: Jack Roche (Bridgetown) beat Geoffrey Atkinson (Tiinryland); Jimmy Dunne (Kilmyshall) beat Jody O'Shaughnessy (Coolgreany).

Division 14: Colin Browne (Coolgreany) beat Ciaran Busher (Bridgetown).

Division 15: Brendan Holohan (Templeudigan) beat Stephen Kavanagh (St. Joseph's); Kieran Reville (Horeswood) beat Stephen Kennedy (Davidstown).

Division 17: Daniel Kelly (Templeudigan) beat Cathal Sinnott (Oulart); Conor Nolan (Coolgreany) beat Cathal Sinnott (Oulart); Daniel Kelly (Templeudigan) beat Barry Sinnott (Oulart).

Women's Division 1: Marguerite Gore (St. Mary's) beat Anne Boland (Templeudigan); Mary Phelan (Clogh) beat Ciara Mullins (Garryhill); Ellen O'Connor (St. Martin's) beat Tanya O'Toole (Coolgreany).

Women's Division 2: Roisin Walsh (St. Joseph's) beat Sarah O'Connor (St. Martin's).
